Ocean Group announces transition to HVO fuel in its British Columbia operations for more sustainable operations

Sep 13, 2024

Vancouver, British Columbia – September 13, 2024 – Ocean Group is proud to announce that it will use HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel for its port towing operations in British Columbia. This new generation of hydrotreated renewable diesel is made from vegetable oils, plant or animal residues, waste oils and fats such as used cooking oil and offers a significant environmental solution. HVO reduces lifecycle CO2 emissions by approximately 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels.

Since 2023, Ocean Group has been conducting operational testing of this innovative fuel at its Delta Port and Fraser River locations. After several months of data analysis and obtaining the necessary approvals from Transport Canada, the company plans to transition to HVO on the West Coast by the end of 2024. Eventually, this sustainable fuel will power every tug in Ocean’s BC fleet.

This transition represents a major turning point in the company’s environmental strategy, consolidating its leadership in the marine industry and reaffirming its commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its various activities. This transition also meets the objectives of the 2023 Collaboration Agreement signed with Musqueam Capital Corp, the company’s business partner on the Musqueam territory. The agreement covered several aspects, including a commitment to developing more sustainable, environmentally friendly navigation.
