Hongkong’s Cheoy Lee Shipyards has been contracted by PSA Marine’s wholly owned unit PSA Marine Peru to install Schottel RudderPropellers aboard a newly-constructed tug.
Schottel RudderPropellers includes the patented SYDRIVE-M technology, which is expected to reduce fuel usage and maintenance costs without the expensive complexity of common hybrid technology.
The upgraded RAmparts 2400W design vessel will allow PSA Marine Peru to provide emission-reduced towing services at Peruvian ports. The 24.4m-long and 11.25m-wide tug is expected to commence operations next year.

ASD tug’s chief propulsion features two diesel-powered RudderPropellers type SRP 460 (2,240kW each), including fixed-pitch propellers with a diameter of 2.6m. With thruster configuration, the tug can reach approximately 70t of bollard pull. Additionally, the rudder propellers include the certified sealing system Schottel LeaCon. This system provides protection against seawater pollution caused by operating materials.
SYDRIVE-M links a port and starboard mounted azimuth thruster in a single ship, enabling the thrusters to be operated by only one of the main engines. This helps lower the operating hours of the main engines, reducing emissions, upkeep costs and fuel consumption.
Furthermore, the system does not depend on additional electronic components, which provides several benefits as established by three main operation modes, specifically Light Operation or Free Sailing Mode, Full Thrust Operation Mode and FiFi-Mode.
